Students new to band for the '25-26 school year

Cost: $100.00

BEGINNING Cadet Summer Band Camp 2025

This is a two-week session for ANY incoming 5th, 7th or 8th grade students that will be new to band for the 2025-2026 school year.

Students enrolled in a Beginning Band course starting in the Fall of the 25-26 school year have a very crucial first step to consider…choosing and trying an instrument. It is of the utmost importance that the band directors in Homer 33C have the opportunity to help guide students and their families through this process and is why it is important that your child attend the Summer Band session for the BEGINNER CADET BAND.

For Beginner Cadet Band, your child will not need an instrument at all yet, in fact, they do not need to possess any prior musical knowledge or skills (no, you or your child don’t need to be able to read notes or sheet music at all…just bonus points if you can!) In this initial two-week 80-minute daily session, we will introduce our newest students to their band directors, their new classmates, many of our processes and procedures that all musicians need, and focus on the first few pages of our method book, The Habits of a Successful Beginner Band Musician. This first part of the book and introductory set of supplemental videos and assignments focuses on the fundamentals of rhythm, pitch, reading music, and making the first sounds on the instrument they choose. We have enjoyed using this book series with ALL our beginner students over the years, and it has proven, as advertised, VERY successful. It comes with many supplemental pieces and online resources to give students and their families many of the necessary tools to ensure that their musical success has continuity from school to home and back, especially for those who may feel like they do not possess the skills to be able to assist their students with the type of work they’ll be doing in music and band classes.

We want to stress the importance that students are able to attend Cadet Band for the full duration of the two week sessions in August, but also know that missing some days will not prevent students’ eligibility to take the class and choose an instrument. However, those students who do not attend the camp, will have to schedule time outside their school day for instrument trials with Mr. Brace and Mr. Thompson after the school year has begun. Please ensure students can attend the camp so they can receive their instrument of choice as soon as possible, and begin working on making great music!
